TITLE:   School Social Worker

 

 

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education/Licensure:

 

Master's Degree in Social Work. Licensure as School Social Worker. Minnesota Board of Social Work License

 

Other Qualifications:

 

Knowledge in child development. Experience in individual, group and family counsel ing/consultation. Knowledge of a variety of clinical and counseling treatments, for use with children and their families. General knowledge of current Federal and State special education law/mandates, including IDEA and section 504. General knowledge of current Minnesota laws governing special education preferred. Effective communication skills with individual and groups. Commitment to the education of all students.

 

LINE/STAFF RELATIONSHIPS:

 

Immediate Supervisor:  Principal

 

Reports to:   Principal and Director of Special Services

 

MAJOR FUNCTIONS AND ATTENDANT RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1 .  Special Education

 

1.1  Assist with early identification, pre‑referral interventions and referrals to special education.

 

1.2  Serve as a team member for the school pre‑referral/student assist teams.

 

1.3  Provide counseling and other appropriate services as stipulated on special education students' I.E.Ps.

 

1.4  Serve as IEP manager for students as deemed appropriate by special education teams.

 

1.5  Assist in assessments, such as conducting observations, or other assessment functions, as deemed appropriate by assessment planning teams.

 

1.6  Collect pertinent background/home information, as appropriate.

 

1.7  Function as district representative at special education team meetings as requested.

 

1.8  Will work with Section 504 plans, as directed by building Principals/504 Coordinators.

 


2. Student Services

 

2.1  Develop and maintain effective working relationships with children, their families, teachers, administration, court systems, law enforcement agencies, social service agencies and other "helping" professionals.

 

2.2  Provide individual and group counseling.

 

2.3  Make community/agency program linkages to assist students and their families.

 

2.4  Provide crisis intervention and support as appropriate.

 

2.5  Consult with education staff relative to appropriate interventions, techniques and modifications for students in need.

 

2.6  Monitoring student attendance and assists with required truancy procedures.

 

3. Education Programs

 

3.1  Coordinate and develop programs that enhance and promote student mental health.

 

3.2  Conduct friendship, social skills, families in transition groups, etc. as determined by each site.

 

3.3  Assist in providing drug, alcohol and tobacco free education programs.

 

3.4  Assist with programs and appropriate activities that align with district's ethical values.

 

3.5  Provide additional duties related to mental health education programs as assigned by building administration.

 

4. Reporting and Records

 

4.1  Manages and monitors all aspects of their assigned IEP caseload according to Special Education Guidelines.

 

4.2  Maintains timely and accurate records of services provided, with particular attention to all reimbursable special education activities.

 

5. Other Activities

 

5.1 Informs supervisors of impending needs and regulations affecting school social work.

 

5.2 Maintains a positive working relationship with Principals, teachers and District Office Administration.

 

5.3 Performs other duties as assigned and required.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

 

Salary and other term and conditions of employment based on Teachers' Master Agreement.

 

EVALUATION

 

This position to be evaluated in a manner consistent with teachers, counselors, media specialists, and others included in the teaching unit.
